Just out of town, on the road past the billabong and out towards the river.
These pics were taken a day after Flood Report #1, the water is higher still. Since then, it has dropped and the water crosses the road in only a few places and its possible to drive out to the river again. There has been more rain to the north, the water is on its way back again. We expect the level to be at least as high as this again on Friday.
Taken from the grid at the edge of town. The water is much higher than yesterday.
The flood boat, ready for action if it's needed. Note the houses of Birdsville in the background.
The pelicans cruise up from the billabong to check out what's new to eat.
This is pretty self-explanatory.
Looking across to the shade shed on Pelican Point, normally a spit out in the middle of the billabong.
Jamie, I've often wondered that myself, although there's no shortage of them. Maybe they get out here and can't be bothered going back. There was one very lonely seagull here before Christmas, but he seems to have decided he likes the coast better.
Hi Michelle, thanks for the great pics and enjoying your accounts. I trust you are not suffering in the shoulders from all the bowling! Regards Brad Tucker, Life and Balance, Glebe
Hi Michelle I'm a Swede who spent a month in Birdsville in 1986 working at Adria Downs and staying with David and Nell. Your blogg brings back memories. Would you pass on my regards to the Brooks. Ebbe Hamilton ebbe.hamilton@infraco.com
Hi Michelle, I just read Evan's book about your time in Birdsville and it reminded me of the time I spent in Richmond North West Queensland and Normanton in the Gulf between 1985 and 1989 as manager of the hospitals in those localities. The outback gets into your system and won't let go and I can't wait to get out to Birdsville. These are excellent pictures and just make the feet more itchy. Regards Chris Gillham
Michelle & Evan Just finished your book and found it a great read. It really felt like I was there with you and when you wrote about the heat and me living in cold winter Victoria I stopped complaining about the cold. Fantastic characters in around Birdsville and one day visit the area. Well done on the book and pictures. Thanks Dennis
I quit my job as a Graphic Designer in Sydney and moved with my husband Evan to outback Queensland to experience what the other Australia is like. We have a lovely one-bedroom unit with a view of the desert.
Wow, Birdsville's wetter than Sydney! And how do pelicans know that it's worth their while flying a thousand kilometres inland for a swim?
